Seeraga samba cultivation is currently limited to the Vellapallam and Keevalur taluks of Nagapattinam district; Uppiliyapuram panchayat union in Trichy district; and portions of Thanjavur district in central Tamil Nadu. This specific form of rice is the first from Tamil Nadu to be given the Geographical Indication classification. Seeraga Samba is the smallest type of rice; approximately one-third the size of basmati rice, aromatic and with a distinct taste which can be defined as a "corny" flavor. Selenium is a non-essential component in seeraga samba rice which aids in preventing cancer of the colon and intestine.It has more fiber and antioxidants, which purifies the colon and assists in the elimination of free radicals from the body.
