Tanjore paintings

Thanjavur painting is a traditional Southern Indian art style that originated in the region of Thanjavur. This artistry derives its immediate resources and influence from around 1600 AD, when the Nayakas of Thanjavur, underneath the sovereign control of the Vijayanagara Rayas, promoted art most notably, traditional dancing and songs well as prose, in both Tamil and Telugu, and temples are carving of primarily Indian religious themes. It is notable for its prominent gold coating. That being said, it is fair to assume that Thanjavur art, as we understand it today, emerged in the Thanjavur Maratha courtroom somewhere around the years 1676 to 1855.

Thanjavur paintings are distinguished by their rich and vibrant colours, simplistic symbolic compositions, shimmering golden filaments superimposed on fragile but elaborate gesso work, and engraving of glass beads and parts, or, on special occasions, delicate and semi-precious crystals. Deccani, Vijayanagara, Maratha, and sometimes even European or Company art styles can be seen in Thanjavur designs. The protagonists of most portraits are Hindu deities, princesses, and saints, and they serve primarily as sacramental symbols. Holy books were illustrated, scribbled, drawn, and painted, with the leading theme or characters in the centre of the picture accompanied by many subordinate characters, themes, and topics.
