Nachiarkoil Kuthuvilakku

The Nachiarkoil Lamps are a decorative brass lantern crafted of a collection of lamps (Diyas), a handicraft product made solely by the Panther tribe in India’s Tamil Nadu. The lantern, which is void-shaped, comes in several dimensions and comprises four screwed-together sections. The main structure that crowns only at the pinnacle is known as the "Prabhai," and it is usually shaped like a “hamsa” or a bird. The lantern can also be rendered in the form of a feminine statue carrying a shallow bowl in a standing pose or even in the style of tree limbs; the container of these lamps has several V-shaped spouts that carry cotton bristles and is loaded with oils to illuminate.

The Nachiarkoil lamp is crafted of both bells metals and brass; brass is much more common now because it is more easily accessible and less expensive. The lamp is composed of three main parts: the "Keezhbagam", the foundation tray, the "kandam", the integral post, the "Thanguli" a container with five orchards to keep bristles and oil for illumination, as well as the "Prabhai" the throne. The subscript Nachiarkoil is given to lamps which are produced in a standing or totem pole shape. In temples or "deepams," other types of lamps are suspended in the air. These lights are richly bedecked.
