Black rice or forbidden rice (Chinese) is an uncommon and very old form of rice that has been grown in India for centuries. It is primarily grown in the North East area (called Chak Hao) and the Southern sections (called KarupuKavuni rice in Tamil) of India. The bran hull (outer layer) of black rice produces one of the maximum amounts of anthocyanins present in any grain. Grain has a comparable amount of fiber to brown rice, which, like brown rice, has a moderate and nutty flavor.
